CityNexus is an innovative urban digital twin application that supports evidence-based decision-making in urban planning. It enables users to assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts of changes in road networks, mobility systems, and urban space design.
The service was developed within the DestinE Platform Use Cases framework to showcase the platform’s ability to deliver actionable information and decision support.
Initially created to meet the needs of the Local Council of Amager Vest, a district of Copenhagen and primary end-user of the project, CityNexus provides a collaborative application to explore and evaluate urban strategies, facilitating a coordinated approach to planning.
Policymakers can simulate “what-if” scenarios, testing the potential outcomes of various infrastructure and mobility policies. These simulations are guided by a comprehensive set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), defined in collaboration with the user community, which span several thematic areas, including mobility patterns (e.g., travel behaviour and traffic flows), air quality, dynamic population distribution, public health, and accessibility of urban services.
Currently in its Beta Testing phase, CityNexus offers demonstration environments for four cities: Copenhagen (Denmark), Bologna (Italy), Seville (Spain) and Aarhus (Denmark). These cities were selected for their alignment with project priorities, such as sustainable mobility, air quality improvement, and urban innovation. The service exemplifies how the DestinE Platform supports climate-resilient urban planning by providing powerful tools for scenario-based analysis, promoting more informed decisions at the municipality level.
