SEEDS is a climate service designed to support climate adaptation in perennial agriculture, currently focusing on apple and grapevine. It is intended for EU farmers, agricultural advisors, and other stakeholders involved in managing these crops and planning adaptation strategies.
The service translates high-resolution climate projections from DestinE’s Climate Digital Twins into crop-specific, decision-relevant indicators for present conditions and near-term future scenarios (2030–2039).
SEEDS provides the following key steps for users:
- Crop Suitability Assessment: the Suitability Map provides a spatial representation of crop viability using the Biologically Effective Degree Days (BEDD) index. Users can interact with the map to retrieve localized insights.
- Phenological Projections: the Predictions and Insights module displays projected shifts in the crop’s phenological cycle, comparing historical timing with future projections to help evaluate management and harvest windows.
- Climate Risk Assessment: the service offers hazard-specific projections for risks like Heatwaves, Excess rainfall, and Drought, providing indicators on the frequency and intensity of projected climate hazards.
- Adaptation Measures: the Adaptation Measures section provides a curated list of practical options for each climate risk. Each measure has a dedicated downloadable factsheet, including a technical description, implementation time horizon, effectiveness score, and an ESG-like assessment to support informed planning.
