The DEA service, implemented by partner Alia Space, has released a new interactive story Storm Alex: A story about resilience, showing how ANAS, Italy’s national road infrastructure operator, uses satellite Earth observation to strengthen the monitoring and resilience of transport infrastructure exposed to extreme weather.
Focusing on Storm Alex in October 2020, which caused the collapse of the Colle di Tenda tunnel between Italy and France, the story combines Copernicus and EUMETSAT satellite data with ERA5 reanalysis and emergency mapping to analyse rainfall intensity, affected areas, and infrastructure impacts in mountainous terrain.
The story highlights ANAS’s long-term integration of satellite interferometry and climate data into geotechnical monitoring, maintenance, and emergency response. By linking past events with future climate trends from DestinE projections, it shows how satellite data support risk assessment, adaptive planning, and infrastructure resilience in a changing climate.
