The DEA service, implemented by partner Alia Space, has released a new interactive story exploring the first eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in northeastern Ethiopia in nearly 12,000 years.
On 23 November 2025, the volcano sent plumes of ash and dust up to 14 km high, with sulphur emissions carried across regions from Africa to India.
The story features an hourly animation of volcanic sulphur dioxide from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, and space-based observations from Copernicus Sentinel-5P and EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites.
Together, these datasets reveal the evolution of the event and highlight how Earth observation enhances our understanding of natural hazards.
