The DEA service, implemented by partner Alia Space, has released a new interactive story titled A record-breaking heatwave swept across Europe, focusing on the exceptional temperatures that affected much of the continent in June 2026.
According to the latest Climate Bulletin from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the month was the second-warmest June ever recorded globally. In particular, France experienced one of the most severe heatwaves in its history, disrupting daily life and taking a significant human toll.
The new DEA story explores how Copernicus satellites provide high-resolution observations of wildfires across Europe, while the DestinE initiative delivers detailed, globally consistent information to support climate adaptation.
It also examines cities’ responses to urban heat islands, including Medellín’s “Corredores Verdes“ programme, Singapore’s “Nature Ways” green corridors, Düsseldorf’s vertical garden – the largest in Europe –, and Italy’s MIRIFICUS project. Together, these examples show how Earth observation, climate information and locally adapted interventions can help policymakers protect communities and improve quality of life.
