The DEA service, implemented by partner Alia Space, has released a new interactive story titled Another Brick in the Hole, a story of recovery and global cooperation focusing on closure of the Antarctic ozone hole on 1 December 2025 – the earliest closure since 2019 and among the earliest observed in 40 years.
This marks the second consecutive year of a relatively small ozone hole, with higher ozone concentrations indicating a continuing recovery trend.
The observed progress is linked to the Montreal Protocol (1987), one of the most successful international environmental agreements, which led to a sharp reduction in ozone-depleting substances such as halocarbons. The impact of this agreement is also described in The Hole, a documentary on the Montreal Protocol narrated by Sir David Attenborough and available on YouTube.
Today, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) continues to monitor the ozone layer using a combination of satellite observations and atmospheric models, providing the information that supports this analysis.
