FloodMIND is a digital service for near real-time forecasting of pluvial (rainfall-driven) flooding, blending short-term precipitation nowcasts with medium-term ECMWF forecasts — the DestinE ExtremesDT high-resolution deterministic forecast and a representative subset of the ECMWF IFS Ensemble (IFS ENS) — into a single blended precipitation product with 20 ensemble members. This output is used in a machine learning flood model to calculate flood depth and extent far faster than conventional hydraulic models. It offers standard nowcasts and forecasts, as well as interactive scenarios, helping water authorities, disaster-risk managers, and municipalities anticipate flood impacts and support timely, informed decisions. Accessible through KNMI’s GeoWeb and integrated into the DestinE Core Service Platform, FloodMIND delivers high-resolution, up-to-date flood indicators for operational use. This service is co-created with the W2O community, with four pilot use cases in the Netherlands. Besides this, the transferability of the model is tested through pilots in New Zealand and South Africa.
