Wildfire WISE

Overview

The Wildfires WISE application is based on the Canadian Wildfire Intelligence and Simulation Engine (WISE). It is a deterministic fire spread model which uses weather, topography, and vegetation (fuel) input to calculate fire behaviour outputs. In this application, the main outputs provided are burn grid, maximum fire intensity, and maximum flame length.

The model output consists of raster and vector files containing fire behaviour information. In the Wildfires WISE application the burn grid, maximum fire intensity, maximum flame length, surface fuel consumed, crown fuel consumed and maximum crown fraction burned values are transformed into NetCDF. The values are taken at the last time step of the fire spread simulation. The primary metrics reported are the burn grid, maximum fire intensity, and maximum flame length, due to their importance in wildfire danger assessment.

Further information on the WISE model is available on the WISE GitHub project and in the Prometheus fire spread model documentation.

Methods

The technical description summarises the WISE fire spread model and its integration into the Climate DT workflow. The WISE model is based on the Prometheus fire spread model and uses weather, fuel, and topography data to simulate fire behaviour.

Data portfolio

The WISE data are provided as gridded NetCDF files with latitude and longitude coordinates. The output includes burn grid, maximum fire intensity, and maximum flame length values from fire spread simulations. More information on the provided data can be found in the full data portfolio.
